Ambassador of Romania to the Unites States of America Dan-Andrei MURARU: I had a very good meeting with Amanda Sloat, Special Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for Europe in the National Security Council (NSC). We discussed mainly security issues and Romania’s steps in line with the Defense Investment Pledge, energy cooperation, and the potential to showcase deliverables in line with the U.S National Security Strategy, the regional and multilateral platforms for cooperation that we can explore, like the Three Seas Initiative. We also heard praise about Romania’s support for Ukraine, and our views strongly converge on continuing the support against Russia’s merciless aggression. Our dialogue is always consistent on these issues and we will continue to pursue them in our bilateral contacts. Amicrosatellite designed by Romanian students will be launched into space with a SpaceX rocket in early 2023? This is the first satellite of its kind that is made in Romania. Nicknamed the “Space Sparrow”, ROM-2 (Romania Orbital Mission) is a satellite designed and built by Romanian high schoolers from Theoretical High School of Informatics Bucharest, reunited in the RomSpace team. The satellite successfully passed SpaceX’s tests, at The Institute of Microgravity of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and qualified to be launched into space. The successful show “Flavours of Romania” will return next year with the second season? Writer and presenter Charlie Ottley, known for the documentaries Wild Carpathia and Wild Danube, will bring to the public 9 new episodes and revisits the great historical regions, in his continuous attempt to capture the spirit of Romania with new stories, tastes, sounds and adventures. The second season provides a portrait of Romania, through travel, cuisine, culture, crafts, history, as well as through stunning natural landscapes and key conservation issues. I had the pleasure to host a lunch to discuss bilateral, NATO, security, and defense matters, at a time when our security concerns are high and ahead of Secretary Blinken’s visit to Bucharest and the NATO Foreign Ministerial at the end of November. We were joined by important representatives from the Department of State and Department of Defense, among them Douglas Jones, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, DoS, and Andrew Winternitz, Principal Director for Europe and NATO Policy, DoD. We also had with us Major General Iulian Berdila, Chief of Staff of the Romanian Land Forces (he served in theaters of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan). A great opportunity to draw the attention of the DC environment toward our region - “The State of the Black Sea”, co-organized by the Yorktown Institute (YI) and New Strategy Center and moderated by Seth Cropsey, President of the Institute. Together with the representatives from the New Strategy Center think tank, we were joined by other relevant experts from Romania and the United States. The Romanian delegation pointed out that Russia remains a long-term threat to the whole Euro-Atlantic area with the will to violate the rules-based international order. The West needs to keep its determination and commitment to Ukraine strong - Romania is a steadfast ally on all dimensions of support and we will continue to be so.
