"Cercetați toate lucrurile, si păstrați ce este bun!"

Apostolul Pavel

Iphones, ipads, emails, Facebook, FaceTime, Twitter and 1001 Apps! Are you using them daily? If the answer is YES, do not worry, you are not alone! Whether we like it or not, the modern technology has become an integral part of how we live, work and play.

I have just returned from a beautiful vacation which happily coincided with a mini-break from all the modern tools provided by today’s technology. I was in Curaçao, having a cup of coffee at Starbucks, and the scene I witnessed provoked me to ponder the question: “are we really that addicted to technology?”

As I entered the coffee shop, I was looking at all the people with their eyes glued to their electronic devices. It really did not matter that they were in Curaçao-the Caribbean paradise, that they were on vacation; they were all succumbing to the lure of FREE WI-FI! Locals, tourists and the always friendly cruise staff, it did not matter, everybody was typing intensely! It made me reminisce about a time long-gone when one was not afraid to miss something important if by chance he or she started a conversation with the person sitting next to them, leaf leisurely through a magazine or just think happy thoughts!

Across the pond, in Europe, things seem to be a little more cheerful. Last summer I was touring Italy, and in one of the restaurants in Verona, I watched my daughter Amanda asking the waiter for the WI-FI password. The waiter smiled, and told her “we do not have it, talk with each other”. Yes, talk with each other, what an almost foreign concept when we’re sitting down to share a meal!

I am grateful for the convenience modern technology brings; however, I feel like we are missing out on something bigger due to this entire technology overload. We are so quick with our typing skills: yet, I cannot help to ask myself, what happened with our human skills? Are they just as sharp as they used to be? I doubt it!

I invite every single one of you to “unplug”, take a deep breath and start living as if these high-tech devices do not exist. I am sure you will find the beauty and tranquility in a cup of coffee shared with a good friend amidst joyful conversation! Do not worry, life will wait for you, and trust me, you cannot afford to wait to start living!
